Just a reminder HR 9495 is still floating around in Senate with no sign of moving forward.
I've recently heard that KOSA is dead at the moment but HR 9495 is rather ambiguous in terms of status.
Doesn't hurt to refresh folks on HR 9495's threats and how to contact their Senators if a vote comes up at the last possible minute, no matter how unlikely.
For those unfamiliar on what HR 9495 would do:
"Basically it would allow the Treasury to strip Nonprofits of their Tax Exemption status if believed to be supporting terrorism without need of crystal clear evidence."
HEADS UP! HR 9495 HAS BEEN RECEIVED IN SENATE!
Tumblr media
Reminder on how to find your Senators!
If you have a GOP/MAGA Senator, use this advice from Reddit in trying to convince them to oppose it:
Do not stop fighting!

the kids online safety act passed the u.s. senate.
long story short (for anyone who hadn't heard of this before) the kids online safety act, aka kosa, is a bill that will censor online content and resources for lgbtq+ matters, reproductive healthcare, activism (INCLUDING PALESTINE AND LIKELY OTHER CRISES GOING ON LIKE IN CONGO OR SUDAN), mental health, etc. everywhere--its effects likely won't be contained to just america.
today, july 30th, 2024, the senate passed it 91-3. it has officially moved to the house of representatives.
is this a pretty massive setback? yes. do you have every right to be scared, sad, angry, or whatever else about this happening? absolutely. but should you give up hope completely? NO!
even though kosa passed the senate, the house is on break/august recess at the moment. we have around an entire month to get emails, calls, and faxes in to house reps, maybe more depending on when they decide to vote on it.
should it pass the house and get signed into law, we still have a whole 18 months before it actually goes into effect. this is plenty of time for digital rights orgs (e.g. fight for the future, the electronic frontier foundation) and other groups that oppose it to file a lawsuit against it. even if, worst-case scenario, it flies through the house immediately after the recess ends, we can still fight this up to march 2026.
so, yes, remember what's at stake here, but also remember that it's not over yet. we lost a battle, not the war.
below are some resources to learn more about kosa and how to contact your reps (first link) + a page that lets you directly contact progressive house reps, sign an open letter opposing the bill, and view others' testimonies against it (second link):
FIGHT. FIGHT. FIGHT.

KOSA PASSES SENATE 7/30/24
Tumblr media
Kosa has unfortunately passed the Senate on a 91-3 vote. I want this to be clear, It’s not going into effect, it still has to get to the House but I believe there will be a break for the month of August which gives us A WHOLE MONTH!! to call your HOUSE representatives and tell them to vote NO on Kosa. It’s not over yet so many people told their senators and representatives that they didn’t want KOSA. We can do it again, PLEASE do not panic and give up!! I know it’s scary I’m very scared right now myself but if we go silent that’s how it’s going to pass the House and get signed to the president. Let’s try to stop that from happening!!!
Call your house representatives!!!!there is more opposition in the House, we can stop it. BLOW UP THEIR PHONES!! edit: hi everyone!! I’ve made a change to the way I worded this post, I would like to apologize about the confusion I may have caused. When I had meant by “barley passed the Senate” i meant it as a way of saying how so many people voiced their concerns for so long (I first ever found out about Kosa on 7/19/23) which lead it just now getting to the Senate floor for a vote due to the pushback and feedback they had gotten. I apologize if 1. I had confused anyone and 2. If I did not word this right lmao :,) keep calling you’re all doing great!! - audri⭐️

For anyone who wants to know what the link says:
Tumblr media
We also should focus on chat control (EU), Bill S-210 (Canada), UK's Online Safety Act, and Australia's version of KOSA. None of these are better the Kill Online Safety Act (KOSA). It's like Even also said here:

Plus this important to keep in mind when it comes to all of these bad internet bills (credit to NetChoice).

KOSA Update Dec. 2024
Pretty sure it's safe to say that KOSA is gone for now. We can breathe for a moment, but should stay aware of it's return and other harmful bills like HR 9495.
When/If KOSA returns it will have to start over in the legislative process, so just keep that in mind. And I think we should also be loud about who is opposing this bill because KOSA supporters are already trying to call us all Big Tech lobbyists, and we're not. We're a diverse group who care about our rights and the rights of us. We all understand that we support privacy and oppose censorship, and we did well in showing that this year.
There's a lot of chaos right now, with the world in general, attacks on different communities, and a looming government shut down, but I hope everyone stays safe, has a good rest of the month, and are ready for whatever our next fight is 😊
Here's Evan BlueSky Thread on everything:
(Also sorry this is late... things were moving so fast between yesterday and today that it was hard for me to follow and keep track 😅)

Bad news. KOSA advanced.
Continue calling your representatives and tell them to vote no on KOSA. It passed the Senate Commerce Committee, not the full Senate, we still have time.
STOP KOSA NOW.
Edit: July 29: The full Senate is voting on KOSA TOMORROW! Please call your representatives and senators to vote no! PLEASE!
Edit: July 30: Senate passed KOSA! The House vote is next. Contact your representatives to vote no now! PLEASE!
Tumblr media
Edit: August 1st: KOSA IS DEAD! For now. It may pop up again. Be on the lookout, if it does pop up again, tell your senators and representatives to vote no!
Tumblr media
Edit: September 13: KOSA MIGHT RETURN! Follow the instructions on this post PLEASE!
Edit: September 20: KOSA PASSED THE HOUSE COMMITTEE AND ONTO THE HOUSE FLOOR!! This happened on September 18th, I am a bit late and for that I'm sorry. But it’s not over! FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THIS POST, PLEASE!!
Edit: September 27: THIS ENTIRE POST STILL APPLIES! THE FIGHT IS NOT OVER, WE STILL HAVE A CHANCE TO FIGHT! PLEASE CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES TO VOTE NO! PLEASE!!
Edit: October 6: @the-vampire-fish-queen said, “Do want to point out Congress is not in session right now but come back around 11/12/24. Also, the Republican leadership is fighting over the bill.” WHICH IS VERY TRUE!
FOR REPUBLICAN REPS:
Tumblr media
FOR DEMOCRAT REPS:
Tumblr media
Edit: October 25: The Heritage Foundation KNOWS that Kosa will REMOVE Pro-Abortion and Trans content IF Trump wins. It has also come to my attention, that from what people have heard from the House of Representatives, Kosa will MOST LIKELY not move on. The keywords there are most likely, keep fighting!

Hey, maybe you don’t use tiktok anymore. Maybe its gone to shit. Maybe you think banning it isn’t a big deal.
Don’t let tiktok get banned. Because its not about tiktok or kids online or any of that. Its about how many rights can be taken away from us, how far these officials and congressman can go, how much power they can accrue without us fighting back.
Do you know why KOSA is back for a fucking third time in a much tamer form? Because they are trying their hardest to pass it. It doesn’t keep anyone safe, and even if the newest version had anything good in it, It still shouldn’t be pushed through because of its horrible history.
We all know that if we give them an inch, they’ll take a mile. I know its exhausting, but they WANT to exhaust us. So don’t let them. Fight.

Urgent News.
One of the largest threats to queer safety, especially queer youth on the internet, is the KOSA bill. It is effectively a censorship bill that will make access to the internet for queers, nigh impossible and constantly monitored.
Now of course the council's concerns may lie within the queer, but the bill will also affect pro-Palestinian messages, activism, truthful information, etc. It will make it difficult to look for sexual health information, information on Palestine, Sudan, the Congo, climate change, queer history, queer info in general.
It is a bill that the USA is going to use to effectively stop all the criticism against them, all the information on the genocides committed in the name of capital, and block out safe spaces for queers in and out of the closet.
And it is being discussed whether to have it added to the FAA. What does that mean? The FAA was the same way the Tiktok ban was passed so easily, a way for the US to pass bills without much resistance. So you might be thinking:
What is to be done?
Well for one, if you are a member of the council reading this, you are obligated to reblog this and spread the message far and wide. And we mean it. Whether through posters, posts, shouting, protests, whatever you can do, you must do. Even if you aren't a council member, morally you should still do it.
As evidently the internet is in jeopardy.
Other than that, sign these petitions, spread these links and urge others to do so. Call your representatives, email them, mail them, fax them. And again, urge others to do the same.
You don't need to be American to spread this or sign these. And you should care still even if you aren't American, as this will be a global effect if KOSA passes.

We must do anything and everything to keep the internet safe. For all.
So do not fall into despair that we will fail, and do not become complacent thinking we will win. Become active and make sure we win.
For in the dark we endure, and in the light we fight for who you call impure.

KOSA has passed the Senate, and it seems like it was also almost completely unanimous. But THIS IS NOT THE END OF OUR FIGHT!
There will be a final vote for the Senate and the House also has to vote on the Kids Online Safety Act. There is more opposition in the House and some people within the Senate are up for election (don't know which states, so I'd recommend researching that).
Vote KOSA supporters out of the Senate. Raise our voices and gain enough traction for the House to block this bill.
WE ARE ALWAYS WATCHING.

Please remember to call your representatives about KOSA. This is still a massive issue and apparently it has enough support to pass in the Senate, which is terrifying. We must stop this from becoming law.

Reminder for anyone scared about KOSA
KOSA has a good chance of not passing! The Senate is only the first part, and even if The Senate doesn’t pass the bill, it’ll go to the house, which has even more opposition! Still, don’t refuse to call, as your call may help oppose the bill! I cannot call, but please, pass on this message along with anything else you reblog regarding World/US events, it may save our fandoms!

KOSA 7/25/24
GOOD NEWS! Rep Alexandria Ocasio Cortez does not support KOSA!! keep calling and respectfully blowing up their phone ❤️
regarding my last post, Kosa did NOT pass the Senate fully, we have some time so PLEASE call and spread and tell your reps and senators to vote NO on Kosa and I urge you to bring up the government ID which can easily be a danger hazard for hackers and doxxing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sen Marsha Blackburn ADMITTING the reason for KOSA is to “save” and “protect” children from the transgender. And I believe we have some lgbtq groups supporting this bill.
